About the map
What do the moving lines show?
Wind at 10 metres above the ground from the American GFS model, six hours ahead of its latest run. Each streak follows the wind: longer, faster streaks mean stronger wind. It is the model's forecast; nobody measured these winds.
How often does the map update?
The GFS model runs four times a day; the map picks up each new run within about five hours of its start time. The time it is valid for is shown in the layer panel.
Why does the map look different from the city forecasts?
The map uses one global model on a 25 km grid so the whole country is consistent. City forecasts use the best model mix for each point, including the higher-resolution UK model in the first days.
