Wind: questions

What counts as a gale?

On the Beaufort scale, a gale is a sustained wind of 39 to 46 mph (force 8). Gusts are brief peaks that can be half as strong again as the average wind. Our tables use gusts because they cause most of the damage and disruption.

Why is it windier on the coast and hills?

Friction with buildings, trees and rough ground slows the wind over land. Over the sea and on exposed hilltops there is little to slow it, so the same weather system brings stronger gusts to Shetland, the Western Isles and the coasts of Wales and Cornwall.

Where are the strongest winds this week?

Aberystwyth, with gusts near 39 mph on Tue. Next is Cardiff at 34 mph.
