What shapes Wales's weather

Wales faces the prevailing south-westerly winds with mountains in the way: Eryri (Snowdonia) in the north, the Cambrian Mountains in the middle and Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons) in the south. Air forced up over them drops heavy rain on the uplands.

The coasts are milder, with frost and snow uncommon on the Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion shores. Eastern border areas lie in the hills' rain shadow and are noticeably drier.
