What shapes Scotland's weather

Atlantic systems reach the west Highlands and islands first, where the mountains get some of the highest rainfall in the UK. By the time the same air reaches Aberdeen, Dundee or Edinburgh, much of the moisture has gone, so the east coast is relatively dry and sunny.

Height decides a great deal. The Cairngorms plateau holds snow for months while the coasts stay mild, and summit conditions on Ben Nevis bear little resemblance to Fort William at its foot.
