Each faint line is one run of the ECMWF ensemble: the same model started 51 times with slightly different starting conditions. Where the lines bunch, the forecast is solid. Where they fan out, the weather is genuinely undecided. For Edinburgh, the runs part company from Saturday.

The seasonal model nudges the odds for whole months. Over the UK its skill is modest, so treat a leaning as a slight tilt and anything within half a degree as no signal at all.

Edinburgh climate: what is normal?

Edinburgh sits on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, with the Pentland Hills to the south-west and Arthur's Seat in the middle of the city. Westerly weather has crossed the length of Scotland before arriving, so the capital is far drier than Glasgow.

The firth opens the city to the east. In spring and early summer, haar from the North Sea can blanket Leith and Portobello for days while the west of the city is bright, and winter easterlies bring raw, cold days.

What to watch for in Edinburgh

  • Wind. The city's hills and exposed position make gusts a big part of the forecast. On a westerly, the funnel between the hills can make streets feel much windier than the average suggests.
  • Haar. A light easterly in spring or summer often means fog along the coast. Inland suburbs and the Pentlands can be clear.
  • Short winter days. At this latitude, December daylight is under seven hours. The sunrise and sunset times on this page are calculated for the city.
