Each faint line is one run of the ECMWF ensemble: the same model started 51 times with slightly different starting conditions. Where the lines bunch, the forecast is solid. Where they fan out, the weather is genuinely undecided. For Glasgow, the runs part company from Saturday.

The seasonal model nudges the odds for whole months. Over the UK its skill is modest, so treat a leaning as a slight tilt and anything within half a degree as no signal at all.

Glasgow climate: what is normal?

Glasgow lies in the Clyde valley, open to the Atlantic to the west and shielded by the Campsie Fells to the north. Weather systems arriving from the ocean reach the city early and bring frequent rain, making it much wetter than Edinburgh.

The ocean also keeps winters mild for a city this far north. Snow settles more readily on the higher ground around the city than in the centre, and fog can form along the Clyde on still nights.

What to watch for in Glasgow

  • Fronts arrive fast. Atlantic fronts reach the west of Scotland first, so timing in the forecast matters: a dry morning can turn wet within an hour.
  • Showery westerlies. Behind a front, showers stream in from the Firth of Clyde, sometimes with hail and thunder in winter.
  • Colder on the hills. Snow often covers the Campsies, the Kilpatricks and the high ground of Lanarkshire before the city centre.
