Each faint line is one run of the ECMWF ensemble: the same model started 51 times with slightly different starting conditions. Where the lines bunch, the forecast is solid. Where they fan out, the weather is genuinely undecided. For Newcastle, the runs part company from Wednesday.

Newcastle climate: what is normal?

Newcastle lies on the north bank of the Tyne, close to the North Sea coast and in the lee of the Pennines and the Cheviots. Westerly weather has crossed the hills by the time it arrives, so the city is relatively dry and often sunnier than the west.

The North Sea is the wild card. In spring and early summer, warm air over the cold sea makes haar (sea fret) that can roll up the Tyne and hold the coast in fog while inland Northumberland is in sunshine.

What to watch for in Newcastle

  • Sea fret. If the forecast shows a light easterly in spring or early summer, expect the coast and the lower Tyne to be cooler and greyer than the numbers for inland places suggest.
  • Cold easterlies in winter. Winter's coldest days here usually come with an easterly off the North Sea, with snow showers possible on the coast.
  • Shelter from the west. Atlantic fronts weaken as they cross the Pennines, so many wet days in the west are just cloudy here.
