What shapes England's weather

Most of England's weather arrives from the Atlantic on westerly winds. The west (Cumbria, Lancashire, the South West) takes the rain first; the hills of the Pennines and Wales then shelter the east, so East Anglia and the Thames estuary are among the driest places in Britain.

The south-east is the warmest part of the UK in summer, being furthest from the Atlantic and closest to the continent. The north-east coast is exposed to the North Sea, with sea fret in spring and cold easterlies in winter.
